Adolescence may in fact be the most significant age of development, as our brains are undergoing critical, dynamic changes all throughout these years.
If your son or daughter is experimenting drugs, he is not only at great risk of teen addiction, but also of in danger of permanently damaging his mind and body. Turnbridge has created this infographic to teach you and your teen about the critical window of adolescence.
The adolescent brain is still young, it is still malleable, and it is without a doubt filled with eagerness and impulsiveness. That being said, adolescence is the period in life that should be most taken advantage of: this is the time where we can truly condition our brains, the time of education, and the time of skill development. A person’s learning capacity will never be greater than it is during these years.
While the brain’s malleability makes adolescence a period of tremendous opportunity, it also poses great vulnerability. The opportunity for cognitive development is often countered by teens making hasty decisions. In adolescence, the parts of the brain dedicated to judgment and decision-making are not yet mature, making teens more likely to try drugs and alcohol.
Youth who experiment with drugs are therefore more susceptible to the learned disease of addiction. Repeated drug abuse can stunt the critical brain growth that occurs in adolescence, and cause lasting cognitive deficits. This is why it is crucial to address a developing substance use problem as early as possible. This is more commonly known as “early intervention.”
When addiction treatment is initiated early, teens are able to counteract the destructive effects of substance addiction on the brain. By focusing on the adolescent brain, behaviors, and the impact of early drug abuse, addiction rehab for teens can enable youth to regain control over their lives once again.
Your child cannot do this without you. Adolescents are less likely to seek drug treatment on their own: your teen may not realize he is addicted, or simply may not have the incentive to change his behaviors. This is where early intervention comes in. This is where you come in. You are his greatest support and his greatest believer.
By exposing our youth to more supportive, positive, and sober environments, we can help them succeed. Share this infographic with your child to educate him on the impact of teen drug abuse, or call us today at 877-581-1793.
